Fan “Triumph of Amphitrite”

Leather leaf, frame: white mother of pearl, carving, gilding, silvering.

Fans depicting the triumph of ancient gods and goddesses were very popular in the XVIII the century. The reason is simple: the mistress of the fan associated herself with the image. This fan depicts triumph of Amphitrite, the wife of Poseidon, the god who commands the seas and oceans. The image on the leaf symbolises the triumph of the Woman-Wife-Mother-Mistress of the house. Amphitrite is surrounded by symbols of love: on the left Cupid floats on a cloud, carried by a pair of doves, on the right and left lie shells – a symbol of female attractiveness, next to stands the god of love Cupid. Amphitrite points Cupid a pair of dolphins – the next “victims” of love, and Cupid is already sticking his arrow. The whole atmosphere of the painting speaks of the light and cheerful disposition of the mistress of the fan.

On the reverse side is a landscape with a castle in the distance.
