Frame: white mother-of-pearl, ivory, painting, varnish Marten. Master Martin- a painter of carriages, at the end of XVII century, derived the formula of varnish, which for safety covered the painting on decorative objects: carriages, pieces of furniture, fans. These fans were called "Vernis Marten" (Martin`s varnish).
The recto side of the fan depicts the scene “The family of Darius at the feet of Alexander the Great” by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690 French artist, worked at the court of Louis XIV), kept in the Palace of Versailles. At the base of the fan are various portraits and characters. The verso side depicts a vast seascape with early eighteenth-century ships on the roadsread and a couple walking a dog.
