Advertising fan for the “Menthe-Pastille” liqueur “The Hague Tribunal”

On the front of the leaf we see the leaders of the world sitting around a table. This refers to the Second Hague Peace Conference held in 1907.

On the bottom left is the advertising slogan: “Menthe-Pastille Liqueur inspires the World”.

Below the fan’s maker signature: Eventails Canne Paris.

Below right, the signature of the liqueur manufacturer: E. Giffard. Distillateur. (Anger). Emile Giffard was a pharmacist in Angers and invented the recipe for this liqueur in 1885. His dascendants still make liqueurs today, the recipe is a secret and has been passed down from generation to generation.

The author of the drawing is Eugene Oge (1861-1936) Franch artist and illustrator, signed on the bottom right: d’apres Oge L. Prevel.

The leaders of countries are depicted in cartoon form, but we can easily recognise them: Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, Emperor Meiji of Japan, Pope Pius X, President Emile Francois Loubet of France, King Edward VII of Great Britain and others. They all hold shot glasses of liquor and praise it.

On the reverse side: advertising slogans, the fan manufacturer’s signature and the address of the wholesale warehouse.
