Ivory, creation with gold powder in low relief, hiramaki-e, shibayama technique.
The front side depicts six men dressed in traditional Japanese clothing. The two on the right hold an open umbrella, inside of which are written hieroglyphics, translated as “Land of the Gods”.
The fan depicts a vast seascape, two cranes, fishing boats, mountain pine, banana trees and the base of the fan a carp against the branches of a mountain pine.
An emrty cartouche is left in the centre, probably for the initials of the European buyer.
The reverse side repeats the front side.
The guard sticks show traces of lost inlays.
