Leaf: paper, engraving, underpainting.
Frame: wood, tinted black, painted.
Fan, dedicated to the conclusion of the peace treaty between France and Russia in the town of Tilsit (now – the town of Sovetsk in the Kaliningrad region) in 1807. A raft was built in the middle of the river for the meeting of Emperor Napoleon and Emperor Alexander I. For the Napoleon the conclusion of the peace treaty was a triumph, for the Alexande I it was a forced step. Russia recognised all of Napoleon’s conquests and in return received the right to annex Finland.
The fan leaf shows a caricature of these events: on a raft the Emperor of Russia presents King Frederick William III of Prussia to Napoleon.
Below the image is the inscription: L’Empereur de Russie presentant le Roi de Prusse a Napoleon Le Grand (The Emperor of Russia presents the King of Prussia to Napoleon the Great).
In the far background on the right and left are depicted military camps with flags and imperial symbols of the parties.
Bottom left and right in an oval cartouches the “Hymn to Napoleon”.
