Leaf: paper, painting.
Frame: ivory, bamboo, carving, shibayama inlaid with coloured stones and mother-of-pearl.
The front of the leaf depicts many characters in elaborate costumes. Two men on the left, dressed in European fashion, stand out against the background of traditionally dressed people. It is probably a satire on the Westernisation of Japan. There is a an author`s signature on the left. The leaf shows many traces of unprofessional restoration. The reverse side depicts a landscape with a red maple tree, flowers and birds. On the guard sticks are carved images of a man and a woman and various insects inlaid with stones and mother-of-pearl.
