The subject of this fan is the wedding of Joseph the Second of Austria and Isabella of Parma in Vienna, in 1760, at Schonbrunn Castle. The fan was made for wedding of another monarch of Austria, Franz Joseph the Emperor of Austria & Elisabeth de Bavaria (known as Sisi) in 1854. The centennial subject was not taken by chance: it was a romantic love story. Joseph and Isabella`s marriage lasted only 3 years, Isabella died of smallpox due to poor health. Joseph loved his wife very much and could not forget her all his life. At the insistence of his mother, the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, Joseph married a second time, but the marriage was not a happy one and when his second wife died, he did not even go to the funeral.
